Essay on using authentic materials and internet
Write a 500-700 word essay in which you:
a) Explain the value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching (See Units 5 and 9 and do your own
research).
b) Say why you feel the text you have chosen would be appropriate for this class and explain the reasons for your
vocabulary selection. If you have adapted your text, explain the rationale for the changes you made in this section.
c) Say why you feel the activities you have chosen would be appropriate for this class.
d) Comment on the advantages and disadvantages of using the internet for teaching and language resources. (See
Unit 10)
Please write the essay under the four headings given. The sections do not all have to be the same length.
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching
There are numerous advantages to using authentic text in the classroom, its main value
allows students to experience close contact with the real-life of target language.
Reading and/or listening to authentic materials increases students motivation and provides
independent learning which in turn creates a more meaningful experience, thus allowing
them to build confidence in what they will encounter on a daily basis.
Using authentic material also allows the teacher to be more creative with lesson designs
as well as the freedom to choose topics that are not only interesting but also correct in its
content.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items
I chose this article as it is relevant to the current times that we have faced this year,
worldwide.
The focus of the text is on how this pandemic has affected the entire world as a socio-
economic crisis.
What the world has learned from this virus, will go down in history and be compared to
world wars and the great depression for many years to come.
I chose the COVID-19 pandemic as it affects every single person both directly and
indirectly, weather wealthy or poor thus giving each student in my class an opportunity to
relate to the text in his/her own personal way.
It is also important to remember that when teaching proficient users of the English
language, reading becomes more purposeful, learners understand more and can fully
process the text.
My specific chosen text contains a broad understanding of the covid-19 pandemic and the
economic crisis it has caused.
My vocabulary selection focuses on certain key terms and phrases which directly relate to
the world-wide Corona Virus pandemic and will help my students to understand the crisis
we are all facing together, better.
I edited the text based on it being too long for the allocated 500 – 700 words.
Therefore I removed some what I felt was immaterial and not important as a learning
interest for the students.
