Poverty: Poverty is deprivation in the most essential capabilities of life,
including leading a long and healthy life, being knowledgeable, having adequate
economic provisioning and participating fully in the life of the community'
(UNDP, 1997).
Poverty Line (World Bank): een persoon wordt als arm gezien als zijn of haar
inkomen of consumptie level onder een bepaald minimum niveau zakt die nodig
is om aan basisbehoeften te kunnen voldoen.
Reproductive health: ‘Within WHO's definition as a state of complete physical,
mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity,
reproductive health addresses the reproductive processes, functions and system
at all stages of life. Reproductive health, therefore, implies that people are able to
have a responsible, satisfying and safe sex life and that they have the capability
to reproduce and the freedom to decide if, when and how often to do so’.
‘Implicit in this are the right of men and women to be informed of and to have
access to safe, effective, affordable and acceptable methods of fertility regulation
of their choice, and the right of access to appropriate health care services that
will enable women to go safely through pregnancy and childbirth and provide
couples with the best chance of having a healthy infant’.
Milenium Development Goals linkage with maternal health:
1 poor health and nutritional status is both cause and effect of poverty,
enhancing womens health will effect both their health and that of their babies
2 improving health of women will enhance their enrollment in education. Also
increased education is known to increase health of women and their children.
Teenage pregnancy reason for school drop out
3 improvent in equity and empowerment will lead to better education for
females, more income earning opportunities, will reduce violence and will
improve their health
4 part of child mortality is linked to maternal health. Improving health of
mothers will contribute to reduction of neonatal morbidy and mortality. Also
orphans are known to be at risk in health.
Goal 6 especially HIV is global burden and heavily contributes to bad health of
women and their families.
Milenium Development Goal 5 Improve Maternal Health: “To deliver an
array of essential information and services relating to family planning; abortion,
where not against the law, and management of abortion-related complications in
all cases; prenatal, delivery, postpartum and newborn care; and the prevention
and treatment of infertility and reproductive tract and STIs, including HIV/AIDS.
Information, counselling and condom distribution for HIV prevention were to be
incorporated into all reproductive and sexual health services .
Policies and programmes were also to provide sexual and reproductive health
information, education and services to adolescents; to combat sexual violence
and discrimination; and to promote gender equality and human rights.”
