Academic Integrity Scenarios

As defined by Alison Kirk, academic integrity is the moral code or ethical policy of academia. This
includes values such as avoidance of cheating or plagiarism; maintenance of academic standards;
honesty and rigor in research and academic publishing (Kirk, 1996).
In my opinion, academic integrity goes hand in hand with a whole set of values; respect, honesty,
fairness, trust, excellence, responsibility, etc. Once we have made the decision to pursue a
graduate degree, we must be aware of the dimension of our resolution with the full
understanding that this is a challenge to improve ourselves.
Studying at a graduate level requires a lot of dedication, time and more than anything a big
financial investment. We have to be committed to fully dedicate to our career and betterment
trying to adhere as much as we can to the values of academic integrity, avoiding the most
common dishonest behaviors (cheating, plagiarism, impersonation, fabrication, deception, etc.)
otherwise we may be in route to a life full of lies.
After reading GCU Policy Violations, the scenario that called my attention the most is the one
that mention the use of material a student has written in the past. Specially because it made me
understand that once we are graduate students we are being challenged to produce new
materials supported with more research, updated sources and our new ideas. In real life, in our
work environment, we may find very similar scenarios that may require innovative solutions and
if we were to copy materials we will never develop new strategies.
