SPCE 619 Professional and Ethical Issues in Applied Behavior Analysis
Online Ethical Debate Research Project
Group Log 2 Assignment
Initial Research and Argument Development
Each group member will gather 2-3 peer reviewed resources based on their arguments
“pro or con”, complete an annotated bibliography, and formulate thesis statements for
each side of the debate.
Tasks:
● Individual Research: Each team member starts a broad search for articles,
academic papers, and ethical guidelines related to the chosen topic.
● Focused Research: Go beyond the broad search. Find specific studies, case
examples, legal precedents, and quotes from experts that directly support your
arguments.
● Evidence Annotation: Create an annotated bibliography. For each of your
resources, write a brief summary explaining how it supports your point. This will be
invaluable during the development of the outline and debate. Ensure you use
proper APA formatting for your sources.
○ Resource: See annotated bibliography example posted under debate
resources.
● Resource Sharing: Create a shared folder for group members to download their
resources and annotated bibliographies.
○ o Recommended: Organized resources into “Pro” and “Con” folders.
● Debate Format Finalization: Agree on the specific structure of the debate. Will it
be a Lincoln-Douglas format (formal)? A policy debate or conversation format
(informal)? How long will each speaker have? Will there be a Q&A portion?
● Roles during debate: Review the videos and resources under Debate Resources to
help decide what roles should be present in your debate based on the type of
debate your group has chosen. Identify who will play what role and list those
below.
● Argument Brainstorming: Based on the initial research, the "Pro" and "Con" sides
should breakout separately into meetings and/or chat groups to brainstorm their
main arguments. What are the 3-4 strongest points for each side of the topic?
● Thesis and Counter-Argument Development: Each side drafts a clear thesis
statement for their argument. They also begin to anticipate, identify, and prepare
for the counter-arguments from the opposing side. To rebut arguments from the
, opposing side, identify the weaknesses in their position. Brainstorm ways to
counter their evidence.
