34 (Preparing for Examinations)
lithotomy - ANSWER-a surgical incision for the removal of a stone from the bladder
proctological - ANSWER-body position that requires the use of a proctologic
examination table; the patient kneels on kneeboard of the table, bends at the hips,
and rests the chest on the table. The head is supported by a headboard.
prone - ANSWER-lying face down
recumbent - ANSWER-in a reclining position, lying down, in the posture of one
sleeping or resting
shock - ANSWER-a condition in which the pulse becomes rapid and weak, the blood
pressure drops, and the patient is pale and clammy.
sigmoidoscopy - ANSWER-the endoscopic examination of the interior of the rectum,
sigmoid colon, and possibly a portion of the descending colon
Sims' - ANSWER-an examination position with the patient lying on the left side.
supine - ANSWER-lying on the back
Trendelenburg - ANSWER-a position with the head lower than the feet
ventral - ANSWER-Toward the belly
Preparing and assisting the patient - ANSWER-1.) make patients feel comfortable
2.) give patient clear patient instructions
3.) use the proper technique when transferring patients from a wheelchair to exam
table.
standard equipment for patient examinations: - ANSWER-stethoscope, gloves,
drapes, tongue depressor, percussion hammer, penlight, otoscope, ophthalmoscope,
lubricant, basin, tuning fork, fecal occult blood test, various specimen collection kits,
tape measure
horizontal recumbent position - ANSWER-also known as the supine position, the
patient is lying on the back with a face-up
Sims position - ANSWER-the patient is lying on the left side with the right knee and
thigh drawn up with the left arm placed along the back
