Suggested consults/referrals:
Referral to an OB/GYN if recurrent yeast infections occur. Recurrent infections are
characterized by 3 or more infections in a year, or if an infection doesn’t respond
to medications prescribed.
Client education:
Candida vulvovaginitis, or a yeast infection, occurs when there is an overgrowth of
the Candida fungus, which is found in the body in small amounts. It leads to
symptoms of itching and a thick white vaginal discharge.
Along with the prescribed medications, Sitz baths may be beneficial in decreasing
the discomfort of itching. Some women find that colloidal oatmeal added to a bath
also decreases vulvar itching. The infection grows best in warm moist
environments. You can prevent future infections by sleeping in loose-fitting cotton
pants and removing the underpants to allow for proper airflow. Remove wet
clothing and bathing suits immediately.
If using vaginal creams to treat the infection, avoid intercourse during treatment,
but if it is unavoidable, use a non-latex barrier method. You can apply vaginal
treatment even if symptoms overlap with menstruation, just be sure to avoid the
use of tampons as these can absorb the medication. Other irritants can cause
vaginal itching and should be avoided. Items such as hygiene sprays, scented pads
and tampons, and vaginal deodorants (Bond, 2017).
Follow-up:
Please return in 1-2 weeks for evaluation to ensure the infection has cleared. If
symptoms worsen, or you begin to have pelvic pain, painful urination, or fever
follow up immediately. If symptoms reoccur, greater than 3 times a year, evaluate
for underlying causes, such as diabetes or immunodeficiency.
