Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative
On April 4, 1893, Robert Wood Johnson Sr. and Evangeline Brewster Armstrong
welcomed the birth of a man-child that was later responsible for the commencement of one the
largest foundation in the United States. The foundation is called the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation and it was founded by Robert Wood Johnson ll in 1972. Mr. Johnson ll devoted his
life to fighting for people to receive quality care, especially in the hospital setting. Due to his
hard work and dedication to helping the underserved population receive better health care, he
spent his life helping others until death. Surprising, Mr. Johnson ll even willed all his treasures to
an organization that is now know to be the world’s largest private philanthropic foundation ever
developed. (RWJF, 2018)
Understanding that the Robert Wood Foundation is a charitable organization and is
dedicated to the improvement of America’s health issues and concerns, it is not the only
organization that is influential in fighting for equality within the public health population.
Another nonprofit organization, solely focused on health care reform, is also well respected in
the medical community. This organization is called the Institute of Medicine. (Institute, 2018)
The Institute of Medicine
The Institute of Medicine organization was established in 1970 from a division of the
United States National Academy of Sciences. Although membership to this organization is truly
a privilege, it is well known in the health care community for its Institute of Medicine (IOM)
Reports. These reports are reviewed and are easily accessible to the private and public sector
alike. (Institute, 2018)
