Film directors of international fame have started a campaign to save two
Greek cinemas. The cinemas are in an area of Athens where many
residents had already had to leave their homes, which were then demolished
in order to build hotels and offices. The plans to close the cinemas were
announced at a time when many expressed concerns about the pace of
development in the city.
The two cinemas are the oldest in Greece’s capital and many consider them
historic monuments. Costa-Gavras, the film director who became famous with
the political drama Z, was among those who spoke publicly about their
cultural value.
