UNIT 5 – FOOD and ENVIRONMENT
RESOURCES:
AQA Textbook pages 263 - 269
CLASSWORK / HOMEWORK (Answer in complete sentences to aid your revision)
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH FOOD:
1. What does food production have a major influence on?
It has a major influence on climate change.
2. Why is this?
Because many greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere, which form
an insulating layer around Earth- trapping heat and raising the Earth's
temperature.
3. List three greenhouse gases that are released:
Carbon Dioxide
Methane
Nitrous Oxide
4. What happens to these greenhouse gases?
They are released into the atmosphere from industry, transport, food
production. They form an insulating layer around the Earth, which traps heat
, causing the temperatures to increase. If there are too many greenhouse gases
in the atmosphere, some of the heat is prevented from escaping into space, and
the Earth heats up too much (global warming).
5. Complete the table on the next page to show how climate change can cause
extreme weather conditions which results in negative effects on food production
and people’s lives:
Effects of climate change on Effects on food production: Effects on people and
the weather: the local environment
Drought: 1) Failed plant crops 1) Hunger and
starvation
2) Dry streams and rivers
2) Thirst
3) Dead fish and livestock
3) Higher food costs
4) Forest and bushfires because food has to be
damage farmlands imported.
4) Air pollution from
dust and fires.
Flooding: 1) Soil and soil nutrients 1) Polluted water supply
wash away.
2) Waterborne disease
2) Soil and farmland polluted
by sewage, rubbish, silt and 3) Homes and belonging
stones left behind. lost
3) Livestock drowned 4) Hunger and
starvation.
4) Landslides destroy plant
crops, livestock and farmland
Severe gales / hurricanes: 1) Damage to crops and 1) Food shortage
livestock housing
2) Damage to property
2) Livestock killed. and livelihood.
3) Transport affected 3) Higher food costs
because food has to be
4) imported.
