UNIT 5 – SUSTAINABILITY OF FOOD
RESOURCES:
AQA Textbook pages 269 - 273
CLASSWORK / HOMEWORK (Answer in complete sentences to aid your revision)
FOOD SECURITY:
1. What does food security mean?
The ability of people to buy sufficient, safe, nutritious and affordable food.
2. How do you know the world is facing problems with food security?
In 2011-13, approximately 842 million people were suffering from continuous
hunger.
3. List the reasons why ensuring food security is difficult:
i) Demand for food is constantly increasing as the world population is
increasing.
ii) There is less land available for more food to grow.
iii) Fewer resources available such as water, energy and fertile soil.
iv) Due to the effects of climate change e.g. extreme weathers
SUSTAINABILITY OF FOOD PRODUCTION:
, 4. What does sustainability mean?
Producing food in a way that can be maintained over a long period of time and
protects the environment.
5. Fill in the missing words to show how sustainability be achieved:
i) Food workers should earn enough to enable them to live well and continue
their work.
ii) Plant and animal diversity needs to be protected so food production does
not depend on a few types which could become diseased.
iii) The welfare of farmed and wild species of plants and animals should be
protected.
iv) Natural resources should not be wasted or damaged to maintain the natural
ecology
v) Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
vi) Provide social benefits for everyone e.g. education, safe/healthy/good
quality food
vii) Reduce food waste and food packaging.
6. What is ecology?
The study of how different organisms interact with each other and their
physical environment.
7. Read the case study about sustainable fishing.
8. List five ways of making fishing more sustainable:
The numbers of fish in the sea need to be conserved so their natural life-cycle
can go on and increase in number.
Ensure Fish quotas (the number of fish of certain species and size that are
allowed to be caught by law) have been set for EU are followed.
The size of the holes in fishing nets have been increased so smaller fishes can
escape.
