Language Development 3 forms part of a group of Language Development seminars, and it
also aims to develop students’ knowledge of English with an emphasis on English for
Academic Purposes. Furthermore, the aim of this course is to emphasize speaking for
argumentation purposes based on research, listening and responding to other people’s
arguments. This course also includes research skills and evaluating the credibility of sources.
Students are supposed to learn basic techniques and special terminology to perform their
own arguments in English with view to a particular topic. The acquisition of argumentation
skills practised through various topics enables students to improve their speaking, listening
and reading skills. Beyond these skills, LD 3 is also to provide students with some basic
insights into research methods. Doing individual research in a particular field not only
develops students’ critical thinking but also proves beneficial for learning new
vocabulary/phrases that contributes to students’ developing their opinions and arguing their
points of view in class debates. Language Development seminars 1 to 5 must be completed
successfully to be able to sit for the Proficiency Exam at the end of the first year. The course
content of all 5 seminars will form the basis of the Proficiency Exam tasks and texts.

continued online, the seminars will be held on ZOOM.
Material/texts for the course will be made available to students before each
seminar which have to be downloaded from the e-learning site, called Moodle.
Students must bring the required material/reading to class. Students are expected
to participate actively in the seminars and come prepared to class. Course
assessment is based on a series of assignments: in-class activities, homework
assignments, summaries, vocabulary tests, mini-presentations, mini-debates and
one-to-one debates on pre-arranged dates.
Students are also required to visit the e-learning site (Moodle) on a daily basis
