NUR 2214 / NUR2214 Nursing Care of the Older Adult Module Eight Overview | Latest 2020 / 2021 | Rasmussen College  Health Resources and Prevention Initiatives  Socioeconomic Factors  Nurses must have an understanding of the socioeconomic and environmental variables that significantly impact the client's health behaviors.  Socioeconomic factors including income, education, health status, and available support systems impact the client’s perceptions about their health.  These factors have a strong indication or prediction towards one’s risk of mortality and morbidity.  Health disparities and poverty within certain groups impact the degree of access to care and subsequently the quality of care.  As one ages and functional limitations and cognitive decline become apparent the older adult may have difficulty navigating the healthcare system in order to get their needs met.  Older adults may not have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes toward health promotion and disease prevention measures.  Environmental Factors  Environmental factors have a significant role in the older adults’ perception about their health practices and greatly impacts one’s overall well-being.  The geographic region, housing availability, community resources available and the rate of criminal activity strongly affects ones approach to health.  Inadequate nutrition, pollution and poor sanitation, and substandard housing are a few common environmental factors that impact older adults.  Age Cohorts
