Origin : Southern Mexico
Micro centre of origin: South America and Costa Rica.
Close relative of Carica peltata.
6 genera and 35 species.
Introduced in India in 16th century from philippines via
Malaysia.
Cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide,
including India, Australia, Hawaii, Florida, Africa, and
parts of the USA.
Largest producer (India).
In India it is widely cultivated in Uttar pradesh, Bihar,
Karnataka, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh.
Naturally dioecious, but gynodioecious cultivars
developed through breeding.
High in nutritional and medicinal value especially
Vitamin A (2020 IU/100g)
The proteolytic enzyme "papain" is used for tenderizing
meat, preparation of chewing gum, pre shrinking of wool,
