HISTORY
First Voyage around the World and the Influence of Europe
I. DIRECTIONS: Create a timeline that would depict or summarize the first voyage
around the world.
• • The fleet sets sail
• Magellan's fleet of five ships and 270 crew members set out from Sanlcar de
Barrameda in south-western Spain. The voyage is funded by German banking
money and is supported by Habsburg Emperor Charles V. The crew is made
Sept. 20, up of people from all around Europe and even Africa, ready for a two-year
1519 journey.
• Scarcity of Supplies
• The fleet arrives in the Canary Islands, but it is already afflicted by issues.
Before leaving, Magellan realizes he has been tricked out of supplies. He also
September has to avoid Portuguese ships attempting to apprehend him as a traitor
26, 1519 working for Spain.
• Tensions are rising.
• The fleet arrives in Rio de Janeiro Bay after successfully crossing the Atlantic.
Tensions are already high between the Portuguese commander and the
Spanish nobility on the ship, who are questioning his authority. They meet
December 'giants' as they sail down the coast of Patagonia, and one of them is carried
1519 onboard.
• Mutineers strike
• Magellan discovers 'Magellan's Strait,' a path through the southern tip of
South America to the Pacific, after a grueling trek south, putting down a
October mutiny and damaging a ship. It takes him over a month to navigate his way
through unknown waters in treacherous conditions, and another ship is lost in
1520 the process.
• Into the Pacific
• Magellan reaches the vast sea for the first time. It's called 'Mare Pacificum,'
which means 'peaceful sea.' He is the first European to voyage across the
Pacific, yet the following stage of the journey will be anything but tranquil
November because he misjudged its size by about half. Scurvy, a disease kills a large
1520 portion of the crew.
• Land at last
• The shattered crew arrives in Guam, Micronesia, after more than three
months of sailing from out sight of shore. When Magellan and his crew try
March 1521 to trade with the inhabitants, they accuse them of theft and name the
islands 'Ladrones,' or 'Islands of Thieves.'
