(Pay your dues) -Who influenced you positively? Negatively? -What do you hope to accomplish coaching? Intro: WHY DO YOU WANT TO COACH: Responsibility & Parents - ANS -Understand how much responsibility you have -The MOST sacred thing a parent has is their child. Parents will do things for their child that they wont do for themselves: they send their kids to YOU Intro: WHY DO YOU WANT TO COACH: Leadership & Philosophy - ANS -Teach them to be LEADERS! Don't just wait for it to happen. -Buy into the philosophy. It doesn't matter how much you know about X's/O's if they don't buy in. Coaching Styles - ANS Passion & Energy Coach OR Technique & Detail Coach Coaching Styles: Passion/Energy Approach: Benefits - ANS -Players develop an attitude of never backing down -Players feed off one another's energy -Hustle and toughness are skills they practice daily Coaching Styles: Passion/Energy Approach: Detriments - ANS -Teams can get tired, especially late in the season. -If the game becomes more of a chess match it slows down, and energy and passion are less important -Sometimes when patience and mental discipline are needed, they are not emphasized. -The emotional tides can be rocky. When things go bad, sometimes the spirit and passion go away. Coaching Styles: Detail/Technique Approach: Benefits - ANS -The team is prepared for almost anything that can happen in a game -The team in fundamentally sound, forcing the other team to beat you; you will not beat yourself. -The players feel they are better coached than their opponents. Coaching Styles: Detail/Technique Approach: Detriments - ANS -Players think too much about technique and forget to just play -Sometimes the passion and energy are not there Coaching Styles: Practice (1) - ANS -The style of play your team plays will factor into the type and length of practice you have. -Some coaches are firm believers in drill work and others in scrimmaging. -Some coaches believe in highly intense, energetic practices, while others are into teaching all of the little details and techniques involved in building a skill Coaching Styles: Practice (2) - ANS -It is important to examine what YOU believe in as a coach to get your team best prepared. -There is a line, and it is important for you to know where you stand on that line. -The approach you use as a coach depends a lot on what sport you are coaching. Coaching Philosophy: Boss vs. Leader - ANS -Bosses put themselves before the team, and make demands -Leaders work with the team and guide them, while also showing them the way Coaching Philosophy: MY Overall Philosophy (Coach Stro's) - ANS -It's not about keeping kids (players) "HAPPY"; its about making them BETTER. Are they improving as a player? -It's about them being responsible enough and accountable enough that if you PLAY in a game, you must perform. -Are there life lessons being taught? Mentors & Assistants: Coaching Mentors: Relationships - ANS -Relationships evolve from specific roles, like coach and athlete, typically take on certain parameters. -While one may have more experience hence the mentor status, that experience does not translate into more power or control -Mentor/mentee relationship needs to develop from a mutual respect and understanding Mentors & Assistants: Assistant Coaches - ANS -An Assistant Coach is a unique position -You may have the same responsibilities and duties as Head Coach, but not the same control and powers -As an assistant coach, you will be placed in awkward or difficult positions. You may not be certain what to do. Mentors & Assistants: 5 Important Attributes - ANS -Loyalty -Vision -Operating Style -Ownership -Selling the program and the head coach Mentors & Assistants: Loyalty - ANS -Whether you agree or not, you need to be 100% dedicated to making the head coach's vision work -Loyalty becomes more difficult when the head coach operates contrary to your values and principles Mentors & Assistants: Vision - ANS -Once you understand the head coach's vision, deciding how you should function and react will be much easier -May be difficult if you have previous experience elsewhere or with a previous staff Mentors & Assistants: Operating Style - ANS -You adjust to him/her!
