1. Knowledge:
o Not just information
o What you can do with information
o It implies knowing how and not knowing what
2. Information:
o Important what you can do with it
o The fact that you know it isn’t important
o The fact that you know what to do with it is
3. Ontology:
o the branch of philosophy that studies concepts such as existence, being,
becoming, and reality. It includes the questions of how entities are grouped
into basic categories and which of these entities exist on the most
fundamental level.
4. Epistemology:
o Is the branch of philosophy concerned whit knowledge.
o Epistemic community: community of knowledge, that shares a set of
concerns, problems,… (paradigm)
5. Critical thinking:
o Not an attitude
o Implies a set of skills, principals and tools
o Careful and systematic reflection upon how and the basis upon which
judgements are made.
6. Exposition:
o Writing that is mainly explanatory and informative
o Presenting idea about your subject by using examples facts and other
evidence.
o Almost any topic
7. Brainstorming:
o Intently focusing on your subject pushing yourself to list any idea or detail
that comes to mind.
o Requires turning off “internal editor”
8. Angle:
o Is the controlling idea of an essay
o They tell you exactly what to write => essential
o Applies to every type of writing
9. The lead “Zinsser”:
o The lead is the introduction (the first sentences) that should peak your
readers interests
o Must provide the reader hard details that tell why the piece was written and
why it ought to be read

10. Audience:
o The group of people you write for
o Make them interested in your writing
11. Entry point:
o The entry point for the reader, he/she decides to continue to read at this
point
o E.g.: headline, subtitle, an introductory paragraph,…
12. Jargon:
o Specialized language for a certain discipline or profession
o Can often be complicated for other people
13. Problem statement:
o A problem statement is a clear description of issue, it includes a vision, issue
statement and a way to solve the problem.
o The 5 W’s: who, what, where, when and why
14. Thesis statement:
o Clearly identifies the topic being discussed, it should only cover what is being
discussed in the paper.
o Belongs at the end of your first paragraph (AKA introduction)
o Used to generate interest in your topic and encourage the audience to
continue reading.
15. Topic sentence:
o A sentence that expresses the main idea of the paragraph in which it occurs
o Usually the first sentence of the paragraph, sometimes at the end
o Makes it less likely for writers to introduce irrelevant matter
16. Sentence fragment:
o Are groups of words that look like sentences but aren’t
o Usually appear before or after the independent clause to which they belong
17. Methodology:
o System of methods used for a particular activity, filed of study,…
o Should be linked back to the literature to explain why you’re using certain
methods
18. Tone:
o The attitude a writer takes towards his subject and reader.
o Varies depending on the writer’s purpose, subject, audience and interests
o E.g.: formal vs informal writing
19. Controlling idea:
o A topic sentence has a subject and a predicate, the controlling idea is part of
the predicate.
o A controlling idea will help you to limit your subject
20. Unity:
o The quality of sticking to one idea from start to finish
