PICOT Question

Developed PICOT Question: In African American adolescent girls, will culturally

integrated intervention approaches such as cultural tailoring, community engagement, gender

specific empowerment and integrating ethnic pride components as compared to the standard

interventions which include generic approaches that emphasize on educating individuals on

factors such as abstinence and clinical testing, help reduce the prevalence of human

immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the population within a year?

The PICOT Components

The PICOT components in these questions include: Population- African American

adolescent girls. Intervention- Culturally integrated education. Comparison- the standard

healthcare education. Outcomes- Reduce HIV prevalence. Time- Within a year. All the

components expected in the PICOT questions have been integrated.

The population is specific in age and other demographics- girls, the African American

population, and teenagers. This reflects the rise in particular age groups and populations, and

other cultural and ethnic elements contributing to the rise. This reflects on the contributing

factors and is relevant to the recommended interventions that will be tailored to meet these needs

and concepts (Baldwin et al., 2016). The intervention- culturally-integrated interventions

reflections on the culturally-related contributors, such as cultural tailoring, community

engagement, gender specific empowerment, and integrating ethnic pride components, and how

they can be leveraged for practical implementations. This reflects on the need to address unique

social, ethnic, cultural, and racial elements, including stigma and inadequate access to healthcare

services in the population.

Comparison element- standard healthcare interventions, such as generic approaches that

emphasize educating individuals on factors such as abstinence and clinical testing, show that

despite having interventions that are already in place, the rates are still high, necessitating other

implementations for better outcomes (Cumpston et al., 2020). This will serve as a control

measure and show what could be improved.

Outcomes show the targeted and measurable expected outcomes that should be attained if

the interventions are practiced effectively. This will determine if the interventions reduce the

infection rates and the practices that could be improved following the interventions, including the

use of protection. Time, which has been identified as a year, shows the timeframe within which

the intervention will be implemented, and the outcomes will be significantly noticed (Cumpston

et al., 2020). The timeline reflects a period within which the outcomes will be feasible and

measurable.

Significance

The population in question- black American adolescent girls faces significant healthcare

disparities and disproportionate burden of disease compared to other populations. Therefore, this

PICOT will help promote a deeper understanding of the social determinants and cultural barriers

to addressing the existing problem. Most of the standard intervention focuses on factors such as

testing and safe sexual practices, which limit the cultural integrations where necessary.

These PICOT questions will improve the following components of patient care: patient

care improvement, patient satisfaction, and healthcare costs, efficiency, and effectiveness. The

interventions recommended in the PICOT provide a strategic approach for better community

engagement to improve health outcomes (Hosseini et al., 2024). It also uncovers sustainable

approaches for reduced expenditure and patient-centered care for improved satisfaction.
