BARBITUATE

1. PHENOBARBITAL (ANTI SEIZURE)
● Long acting, treats epilepticus
● S/E: confusion, dizziness, drowsiness
● Adverse: sedation, RR depression, tolerance
● Interventions: do not give to patients in a coma or with RR depression.



BENZODIAEPINES

2. ALPRAZOLAM (XANAX) & MIDAZOLAM (VERSED)
● Anti-anxiety & sleep, panic disorder
● S/E: decreased vital signs, lethargy, drowsiness, fatigue, headache,
anterograde amnesia

● Adverse: hypotension, bradycardia, RR depression, tolerance,
dependency status


● Interventions: caution with older adults, PT with renal impairment or
heart disease, PT with RR depression, hypotension, or alcoholism, do not
take if pregnant, do not take if have sleep apnea, do not take with OTC
sleep meds, do not take with green tea or grapefruit juice (alprazolam),
do not drive, gradually withdraw, put on safety precautions

● Adverse: monitor VS, hypotension, decreased RR, dependence,
depression, orthostatic hypotension
● Interventions: do not give to PT with glaucoma, CNS depression, alcohol
intoxication, liver/kidney issues, caution with suicide ideation, addiction,
do not drive, no kava kava, tobacco & caffeine decrease effectiveness,
takes 1-2 weeks to work
