Psychology comes from two Greeks words; psych meaning mind
and care and logos meaning the study of a subject
Psychology is the study of behavior and mental processes.
Behavior is anything that can be observed when something is
stimulated.
GOALS OF PSYCHOLOGY
To be able to describe and explain human behavior.
To be able to understand the causes of this behavior
To predict behavior under certain conditions
To modify or influence behavior through the control of its
cause.
To apply psychological knowledge in ways that enhance
human welfare.
BRANCHES OF PSYCHOLOGY
Biopsychology- Branch of psychology that studies the
biological basis of human behavior.
Cognitive psychology-Branch of psychology that studies
the process of sensing, problem solving, persevering and
thinking .

, Development psychology-This is the study of how people
grow and change throughout their lives.
Personality psychology-This studies the consistency and
change in people's behavior and the characteristics that
differentiate people.
Experimental psychology-This is the branch that utilizes
scientific methods to research the brain and the behavior.
Clinical psychology- Branch that explores the relationship
between psychological factors and physical ailments.
Counseling psychology-Focuses on educational, social, and
career adjustment problems
Industrial Organizational Psychology-Studies the
psychology of a workplace

EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY
Is concerned with the learning process and psychological
issues associated with training of students.
IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY TO
TEACHERS
 Guides teachers in planning, organizing and evaluating
the evaluating the teaching and learning activities in
the classroom.
 Helps the teacher in formulating learning activities
and goals that are appropriate, reasonable and
attainable based on the level of the learners.

,  Equips the teacher with appropriate principles of
learning and teaching and different approaches of
teaching for better results.
 Helps the teacher to access and know the abilities and
potential of her/his students and guide them
accordingly.
 Enable the teacher to select teaching methods that
are appropriate to the level and mental abilities of the
students.
 Provides the teacher with knowledge on how to
motivate learners in ways that facilitate learning
 Enable the teacher to create a conducive climate in a
classroom so that learners can learn comfortably
without interference

adequate assessment tool to asses learning outcomes

SCHOOLS OF PSYCHOLOGY

, STRUCTURALISM
The study of psychology as an independent discipline,
was conceived by Wilhein Wunbt in 1879.
He proposed that primary focus of psychology as a
discipline should be consciousness hence psychology
becomes the scientific study of conscious experience.
He believed that conscious experience could be
investigated with objective techniques similar to those
used by other scientist in other fields.
1. STRUCTURALISM
Pioneered by Edward Titchener
Based on the motion that the task of psychology
is to analyze consciousness into the basic
elements are related .
Sructuralists used the method of introspection to
study sensation and perception which hey
consider basic element of consciousness.
2. FUNCTIONALISM
Pioneered by William James
Was influenced by Charles Darwin's theory of
evolution by natural selection based on the belief
that psychology should investigate the functions
and purpose of conscience into its basic elements
least structurally while looking at static element
in that flow.
