Music Therapy for Autistic Persons
Music has been existence since ancient times; it existed in the empires of Egypt, Greece,
and Rome (Marcheva, 2018). Music was not only used for entertaining purposes alone but also
as a healing therapy. After the world wars, music was used to heal post-war trauma among
patients who had been wounded (Sandoval, 2016). Cases of children with autism spectrum
disorder are increasing globally; the condition affects several individuals in the society ranging
from children and persisting to old age. The patients have challenges in non-verbal
communication, social interaction, and speech. Children with this disorder can be identified from
the age of 2-3 years. Other children may develop normally but then, as time goes, begin to lose
the social skills they had learned before. The condition is much pronounced in boys as compared
to girls. Patients with the disorder live with it for life though if understood and receive the
appropriate therapy, they may proceed to live good lives (Lipinski et al., 2018). Autistic
symptoms are heterogeneously changing from an individual to the next. It makes the
development of therapy difficult.

Children with autisms do not share their feelings with friends, do not converse well, and
show reduced interest in things around them. They cannot read the emotions of others; hence will
not maintain eye contact nor exhibit facial expressions (Simonoff et al., 2020). They cannot
make friends are often found lonely. They also have a unique repetitive pattern of behaviors that
are not common among normal children of their age; they might be much interested in something
and unnaturally experience the world. To maintain their space, they may exhibit defensive
behaviors against their peers by fighting them or harshly retaliating when approached.
Individuals with autism exhibit a wide range of intelligence. Some are very intelligent with
exceptional memory abilities as compared to other children. Others are moderate, while some
have a big problem in comprehending Ideas. All these created issues of informal learning; they
need special attention and care to learn ideas (Boujut et al., 2017). Children with autism should
be taught by understanding teachers who will be patient with them and apply a variety of
teaching skills to ensure that the students get a very conducive environment that will enable them
to learn.
