INTELLIGENCE TESTING
Significance of Intelligence Tests
In the counseling field, tests and assessments are critical tools for counselors to use with
their clients in order to arrive at a diagnosis and then create a proper treatment plan. Using these
tools are significant in that they can provide different answers, allow the counselor to get a clear
or full picture of their client’s strengths and/or limitations, their current mindset, and as Cohen
&Swerdlik (2018) state, “to help assess current status with regard to some disease or condition,
gauge treatment progress, and evaluate outcome of intervention” (Cohen &Swerdlik, 2018).
Intelligence tests are one of the primary tools that counselors use, especially for children, as they
assist in identifying children with learning disabilities (Benson, 2003). Intelligence tests for
children are a critical tool as they provide “standardized ways of comparing a child performance
with that of other children observed in the same situation” (Hussain, Jamil, Siraji&Maroof,2012).
Throughout time, psychologists have had several different definitions of what intelligence is
along with several different approaches for how to measure intelligence (Cohen &Swerdlik,
2018).
Attributes to Intelligence Tests
Measuring intelligence involves testing a person’s “performance on different types of
tests and tasks as a function of developmental level” (Cohen &Swerdlik, 2018). When measuring
intelligence, there are several factors that can affect the measurement process, such as “a test
author’s definition of intelligence, the diligence of the examiner, the amount of feedback the
examiner gives the examinee (Vygotsky, 1978), the amount of previous practice or coaching the
examinee has had, and the competence of the person interpreting the test data” (Cohen
&Swerdlik, 2018). The biggest factors that affect intelligence though, are race, gender, language,
class, and culture. Culture plays a role in so many aspects of counseling, and intelligence testing
