, HTH-350 Survey of Historical Theology Final Exam 2
Question 1.
All of the magisterial reformersLuther, Calvin,Zwingli, and the Anabaptists took their
inspiration from the Holy Bible itself and they all understood that the bible itself was inspired by
God for mankind. Luther was the only one that had problems with the cannon, so he focused on
the doctrine of justification by faith. Luther started out studying the whole bible but then focused
on which books were more important than others in the New Testament like James, Jude, and
Revelation. His greatest issues were the comparison between the book of James and the epistles
of Paul which he thought was the greater of the two because of its teaching on justification by
faith without works. Zwingli on the other hand had no problem with the bible except when it
came to the book of Revelation which he felt that it could not have been produced by the Apostle
John and that it had no theological relevance. Even Calvin accepted all the books of the old and
New Testament but never created a commentary on the book of the Apocalypse. The church of
Rome embraced the Apocrypha of the Old Testament, the other reformers recognized only the 66
books of the contemporary Protestant Bible. All the reformers agreed with the Augustinian
concept of salvation and sin, they also agreed with his writings on depravity and deliverance.
The Anabaptists held slightly different views when it came to the concept of man's free will, they
held stricter standards when it came to predestinationandelection. The Anabaptists also rejected
the idea of man’s assurance of salvation, also they held to a more congregational form of church
administration, but the other reformers held to the more Presbyterian form of government which
was ruled by elders.Dr. Jack L. Arnold, May1999.
