The world has changed over the years within the educational field widening to be able to
help all children no matter their ability. With the writing of the IDEA act the educationsystem
began to open its eyes to see that no matter a student’sability to be participate in school.By
allowing a student with any level of disability to attend school there will be an IEP put in place
to help accommodate the student to be able to best help the student succeed. By allowing
students with a disability into the classroom, the student becomes educated and allowed to thrive
with peers. By allowing a student access to a classroom full of peers one allows the IDEA and
IEP to work for the student to become successful.
The IDEA act was first introduced in 1975 when students with disabilities were not
allowed in a classroom as they slowed the class down and didn’t allow the teacher to teach they
wanted to. But as the act known first as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act but later
known as the Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act or IDEA that was passed in 1975 was
a leap forward for families that have a child that is of school age and has a disability(Mastropieri
& Scruggs, 2018). With the passing of the act, children with disabilities are able to be in a
classroom with peers and be educated like every other student in school. The purpose of the act
is to allow disabled students to be educated in the least restrictive way possible. This means in
simple terms that a student is able to access a general education classroom for any maximum
amount of time possible and be seen as a student and not seen as a burden on the classroom or
teacher. With the passing of this act many families were finally able to see their child thrive in
school and be a student for the first time as they were allow to have a free and appropriate public
education that is inclusive for their child. Before the act was passed many families had to pay for
institutions that were not appropriate for the child that had a disability.
