Professionalism and Social Media
While reviewing all of my social media accounts in which I engage in I did find a post
that could potentially be considered inappropriate based on the professional standards of nursing.
According to the American Nurses Association (2020), there are various principles that were
created to guide us nurses when using social media and the one I have not taken into account has
been “nurses should understand that patients, colleagues, organizations, and employers may view
postings”. After taking this into account I have deleted the posts from my page and took
advantage of my privacy settings to separate personal and professional information online.
While everyone has the right to freedom of speech, nurses must take into account that
posting their feelings, thoughts, or patient information can jeopardize their career. The reason
why nurses have the responsibility to uphold a standard of conduct consistent with the standards
governing the profession of nursing is because, effective nurse/patient relationships are built on
trust (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2018). Patients rely on individual in the
medical field that their most personal information and their basic dignity will be protected
(National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2018). A breach in this trust damages the
