Media is all around teens these days. It does not matter if it is a social platform like
Facebook, tiktok or Instagram or just a simple video game that they saw an ad for or playing
because they saw a friend playing it. The influence video games have on teens is expected since
everything humans do has an influence in one way or another. This paper will discus the way
video games have impacts on teens in middle school. The discussion will be about brain
function, physical development, and social development in these teens. There will be negative
, Media and Development
and positive impacts along with discussing the Urie Bronfenbrenner theory of the impact of
video games.
Video games have an incredible impact in younger players especially on the brain
functions since they are more susceptible to get addicted to video games. There is a
psychological disorder called Interned gaming disorder (IGD) it is the overuse of video games in
an individual. Teens have a wide range of video games to choose from to play them all day.
Most children only play video games to socialize and it is not healthy which makes this a
negative impact in a teen’s life. Positive impacts would be that teens can learn from games such
as tragedy games were, they must use their brain skills of figuring out problems and situations.
Studies have shown that the presence of IGD in young players is accompanied by decreased gray
matter volume in many essential areas of the brain including the prefrontal cortex
(Sugaya ,2019).
Video games are overused over the course of the past few years if not decades. Children
play video games from the time they come home from school till the moment they must go to
sleep sometimes, the department of health says that children should exercise at least one hour per
day no matter if its going to ride their bike or just playing catch with heir friends, most children
cannot accomplish this task because they seem to be to involve in their video games. When a
child does notexercise there is a chance for obesity and poor body composition, it can have
severe impacts on the child’s health (Martorell,2015). Video games can make the eyes become
strained if watching the PC or TV to long. Children can experience headaches or even worse
migraines that come from too much screen time. In an overlook of the physical effects of video
games it can cause a lot of problems in the future for an hour of playing a game with no
meaning.
