Educator Statement of Intent
Continued professional growth is key to a lasting and rewarding career in education.
Educators must embrace changes and challenges, rather than shy away from them as they are
modeling example behavior for the next generation. There are a vast amount of resources
available to educators allowing them to stay up to datewith best practices in their area of
education, from Special Professional Organizations, to academic journals and publications. The
purpose of this essay is to display my understanding of academic regulations, best practices, and
resources available to me as a future educator, as well as state my intent for professional growth.
Professional Growth
In order to expand job opportunities while simultaneously broadening horizons, , English
teachers should obtain their TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate. The
TEFL Certificate allows desiring individuals, with or without a university degree, to teach
English to non-native speakers. To become TEFL certified, an English teacher should research
different online and in-person programs available to them, that “meet international standards for
the regulation of acceptable English language teaching certification. (Tefl, 2020)
The National Council Teachers of English (NCTE) is a Specialized Professional
Association (SPA) that supports English and Language Arts teachers with resources to aid in
their expansion of knowledge and professional growth. They also provide a progressive list of
standards used across the country that support English educators. Future English teachers should
join this organization in order to be the most effective educator and leader they can be. SPA’s
foster community and collaboration amongst teachers, which is a critical component of growth as
an educator.
