Instructional Plan Title: Main Idea and Supporting Details
Lesson Summary and We will read the book “The Gruffalo” as a class. After the story, students will
Focus: discuss the important elements such as who, what, where, when, why. This will
help focus on comprehension, communication, and language development.
Classroom and Student The classroom hosts nine fifth grade students, of which three students are on
Factors/Grouping: IEPs. These three students have disabilities ranging from reading, ASD, and
emotional and behavioral disorders. These affect all areas of academics. There
are two students who have mild ID and another with a speech language
impairment with reading needs.The classroom also has a student who is
repeating fifth grade while a new student is also in the class, but their records
have yet to be at the school, however reports that this is the second time in fifth
grade. All students are below their peers.

Specific Learning The students will discuss and review the main points of the story “The
Target(s)/Objectives: Gruffalo.” They will describe the main characters (Who), the location (Where),
the idea or what is happening in the story (What), time (When), and Why. They
will describe all characters, the mouse, the Gruffalo, the owl, the Snake, and the
fox.
Students will be able to identify at least two main characters and
provide supporting details.
Students will discuss the remaining 5Ws of who, what, where,
when and why.
