American students are being traumatized in schools. On an unfortunate day, their path to
their math class can become the scene of their worse nightmare. During the last decades, gun
shooting in schools has become a tremendous problem in the United States. Anyone can be
involved in a school shooting, staff members, parents, students, and visitors: no one is safe.
Sandy Book Promise published an impactful Public Service Announcement (PSA) which its
purpose is to bring awareness of this issue. This commercial appears to be a back-to-school
advertisement when, in reality, it touches on the sensitive topic of gun shooting in schools. Sandy
Hook Promise Back-To-School Essentials PSA has different categories that make a powerful and
impactful message; for example, it appeals to emotions using children, it is brief, and it uses
visuals and music effectively.
This Public Service Announcement has a powerful message and makes sure to touch
emotions by having children as actors. According to the article, You Can Produce Effective
PSAs, by William D. Novelli, using children in a PSA is effective because they are vulnerable
and defenseless (2020). Having children as actors in this PSA concerns the audience because
they are venerable and cannot defend themselves like an adult would. Also, in the article The
Use of Children in Advertising and the Impact of Advertising Aimed at Children, by Joanna
Kinsey, children are a “vehicle to create rational and emotional appeals for different target
audiences” (2015). Having children in this PSA is impactful because it makes the audience
realize how children's lives are in danger. This appeals to emotions causing sympathy and
sadness, which strengthens the PSA.
Having children as the main characters of this Public Service Announcement touches the
