Introduction of
tribology
, tribology
• Study of interacting surfaces in relative motion.
• Not only the interaction of 2 surfaces, tribology now studies friction, wear, an
lubrication.
• Depending on the purpose, friction can be beneficial or disadvantageous.
• Brakes need high friction to stop, but bearings/mechanical components of th
machine need low friction to reduce heat to increase work efficiency, also to
reduce wear (damaging each other’s surface).
• In this study, we will learn to reduce the friction of the mechanical componen
of the machine.
• To reduce friction, we need proper lubrication of the surfaces. Lubrication ca
reduce oxidation of the metal surfaces.
