● Examples(penicillin, amoxicillin, ampicillin)
● MOA: Bactericidal- destroys the bacterial cell wall
● Side effects: Upsets GI tract, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, allergic reactions
● Education: these are widely used because they are safe, patients should use an
additional form of birth control, these make oral contraceptives ineffective
*patients who are allergic are often also allergic to cephalosporins-cross sensitivity
Cephalosporins
● Ceph, or cef
Examples: (cefalzolin, cephalexin, cefaclor)
● MOA: Bactericidal- destroys the bacterial cell wall
● Side effects: Upsets GI, nephrotoxicity, steven johnsons syndrome
● Education: patient should use an additional form of birth control, do not drink alcohol with
these drugs, stop taking if rash develops
*cross sensitivity with penicillin
Glycopeptides
Vancomyocin
● MOA: bactericidal- inhibits cell wall synthesis
● Side effects: Ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, Vancomycin flushing syndrome (Red Man's
syndrome)- occurs even when given too quickly, red rash, itching, hypotension
● Education: give over 60 mins
