Guided Reflection Questions
Opening Questions
How did the simulated experience of Marvin Hayes’s case make you feel?
I really loved the practice and how it was a scenario I could have one day when I do become a nurse.
Talk about what went well in the scenario.
I think the vital signs, identifiers, and the hygiene went very well because I have already learned how to
do that.
Reflecting on Marvin Hayes’s case, were there any actions you would do differently if you were to
repeat this scenario? If so, how would your patient care change?
There isn’t anything I would do different, but I might have done some things in a different order maybe
the least messy to the messiest. I need to find my own way of doing things the right way.
Scenario Analysis Questions
PCC What priority problem(s) did you identify for Marvin Hayes?
He didn’t have any problems other than his recent surgery. His pain was managed. He did have
some leakage around his stoma, but we educated the patient and changed the colostomy bag.
PCC What potential problems could arise due to the newly placed colostomy?
I think a potential problem would be from not following his diet or neglecting to change his
colostomy bag the right way and being sanitary.
PCC Discuss what type of diet would be appropriate for Marvin Hayes.
Mr. Hayes needs to drink plenty of water and avoid foods that cause odor such as asparagus,
fish, etc. Yogurt treats odor. He also needs to avoid foods high in fiber to prevent constipation.
PCC/T&C Discuss the importance of peer support groups with other adults with colostomies.
