NURSING C918-Evolving Roles of Nurse Educators in Diverse Environments
Evolving Roles of Nurse Educators in Diverse Environments – C918 Western Governors University A. Interview Guide ANE interview core questions: 1. What are the qualities most needed to be a successful academic nurse educator? You can’t be a nurse educator for the money because typically they make less than a nurse in the clinical setting. This specialty requires a person that is flexible, an expert with adult learners, patience and able to draw from own experiences. 2. Describe your role as an ANE in facilitating student learning in meeting learning outcomes. All faculty collaborate to design curriculum and syllabuses of the nursing pre-licensure program. My role is to ensure that the course content supports the learning outcomes using the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies. My course has a flow that learning outcomes align with the associate degree in nursing (ADN) program learning outcomes for Yavapai College and includes educational activities and tools to assist in student nurse success. 3. What in your organization’s expectations of you in regard to your role in teaching, scholarship and maintaining your clinical expertise in practice? I am a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE). This certification demonstrates to Yavapai College administration, healthcare facilities, students and peers that I am committed to education as a specialty and hold the role to the highest standards. I am the President of the Arizona Nurses Association and maintain employment as a bedside nurse on a medical/surgical/telemetry unit at the local hospital. I continue personal growth with reading relevant nursing journals, a medical-surgical certification, community outreach volunteering and received my PhD in 2014. 4. What is your role in curriculum development, improvements, and program accreditation? The Yavapai College nursing program is accredited by the Arizona State board of Nursing and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). All faculty members are involved in curriculum and syllabus development. Course content improvements are student-driven based on data from surveys and National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) pass rates. 5. How has technology transformed nursing education and your role as an educator? The expectation of nurse educators is to create more online courses. My Leadership and Management course is the only class in this nursing program that is a hybrid experience. It is an 8-week course with 3 face-to-face lectures and the remainder is independent learning online. I enjoy teaching this way however it can be harder for students to stay accountable when they do not have to be present for a lecture every week. ANE personalized follow-up: 1. What is the most challenging part of nursing education for you?
