Week 1: Anatomical Terms and Homeostasis


Fuchs' Heterochromic Iridocyclitis –

• Fuchs = scientist’s name
• Hetero = different
• Chrom = color
• Irido = iris (which mean rainbow)
• Cyclitis = inflammation of the ciliary body

Anatomical position –

• A standardised method of observing or imaging the body that allows precise and
consistent anatomical references
– Body in standing position
– Facing the observer, head level
– Eyes facing forward
– Feet flat together on the floor, but slightly apart
– Arms at the sides, palms facing forward, fingers together with thumbs pointing laterally.

Body planes and sections

• Plane: an imaginary flat surface
• Section: a cut along a plane
• Planes: Sagittal plane: divides the structure into left and right parts, Midsagittal division
thru the midline, Parasagittal: division offset from the midline
– Frontal (coronal) plane: divides the structure into anterior and posterior parts
– Horizontal plane: divides the structure into superior and inferior parts– Oblique
plane

Directional terms

• Superior: above, upper part
• Inferior: below, lower part
• Anterior: towards the front, in front of
• Posterior: towards the back, behind
• Medial: towards the midline
• Lateral: away from the midline
• Proximal: close to the trunk or the attachment of limb to trunk
• Distal: away from the trunk or the attachment of limb to trunk
• Superficial (external): towards or on the surface
• Deep (internal): away from the surface
• Rostral (cranial / cephalic): towards the nose (beak)
• Caudal: towards the tail
• Dorsal: towards the back
• Ventral: towards the belly
