STUDYGUIDE
What is the CTZ?
The chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) is an area in the
medulla oblongata that communicates w/ other structures
in the vomiting center to initiate vomiting
diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
1st generation antihistamine
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) uses
treat allergic rhinitis, common cold, cough, sneezing,
pruitus, urticaria, prevent motion sickness, can even help
with sleep.
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) mode of action
Antagonizes histamine effects
(Benadryl is a very high protein binding drug, wins H1
receptor spot)
What area/system does diphenhydramine affect?
Upper respiratory
Diphenhydramine cautions
Narrow-angle glaucoma, BPH, pregnancy, breastfeeding,
urinary retention.
diphenhydramine interactions
- increased CNS depression with alcohol, opioids,
hypnotics, and barbiturates
-AVOID USE w/ MAOIs.
Diphenhydramine side effects
, agitation, insomnia, urinary retention, blurred vision, dry
mouth and throat, hypotension, abdominal pain,
constipation, , photosensitivity, palpitations
Diphenhydramine life threatening effects
Agranulocytosis, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia
Dextromethorphan (Robitussin) classification
antitussive
Dextromethorphan (Robitussin) used for a
Nonproductive cough from respiratory tract infections or
irritants.
Dextromethorphan (Robitussin) mode of action
Depresses cough center in medulla
Dextromethorphan (Robitussin) Caution
Pregnancy, asthma, emphysema, hepatic disease
Dextromethorphan (Robitussin) Drug interactions
- increased CNS depression with:
Alcohol, antihistamines, antidepressants, opiates
- Hypotension and hyperpyrexia if taken w/ MAOIs.
Dextromethorphan (Robitussin) side effects
CNS effects, fatigue, GI distress
Dextromethorphan (Robitussin) teaching
Increase fluid to decrease viscosity of secretions.
Four major pulmonary disorders
Chronic bronchitis, Bronchiectasis, Emphysema, Asthma.
Restrictive lung disease
A decrease in total lung capacity because of fluid
accumulation or loss of elasticity of the lung
COPD
Airway obstruction with increased resistance to airflow.
Albuterol classification
Beta 2 adrenergic agonist
