Basic Skills in Music.
What is Music:
The art of combining sounds in a specific time/pattern that sounds
pleasant to the human ear.
Music expresses feelings and emotions and ideas through vocal or
instrumental means.
Elements of Music:
1. Melody
A succession of notes of varying pitches which are organized in a specific
shape.
The movement of notes in a melody is horizontal because they are heard
consecutively (One note after the other).
2. Rhythm
This are the beats and their time duration or value.
3. Harmony
This is the combination of sounds. Harmony is vertical in movement as
opposed to the horizontal movement of melody.
4. Timbre
This is the quality of sound which may also be described as dark, bright or
rich.
This quality is distinguished in production by an instrument or a singer.
5. Form
The shape, structure and design of a composition or piece. Composers use
different techniques to create musical form. They include: repetition,
contrast and variation.
6. Texture
The different layers of sound in a composition.
It can also be described as the lightness or heaviness of a piece.
There are various forms of texture:
Monophonic: This consists of a single melodic line without
supporting harmony
