Abortion
Abortion is the spontaneous ( \'1J\~C OJ:Y'\{}J\l ) or intentional termination of a
pregnancy before the age of viability <~-t\)~____ weeks gestation).
Treatment: when a threatened abortion occurs, efforts are made to keep the fetus in utero until
the age of viability.
• Cerclage, or suturing an \QtAJm~\t(\t cervix that opens when the growing
fetus presses against it is successful in most cases.
If it is determined that the pregnancy has terminated spontaneously, a D&E (Dilation and
evacuation) (also called D&C) is done to remove the POC (products of conception). Once the
woman is discharged home, her discharge teaching should include the following:

o Do NOT use :\:lro~\ • , which may cause infection
• Take temperature every __ i____ d

o Report signs of infection
