The Disappearance of the Maya Civilization

The Maya civilization, which once thrived in parts of modern-day Mexico,
Guatemala, and Honduras, began to decline around the 9th century for
reasons that are still debated by scholars. For centuries, the Maya built
impressive cities with advanced architecture, developed complex writing
and calendar systems, and maintained a rich culture. However, by the
time Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century, many of the great
Maya cities were already abandoned.

One widely accepted theory is that environmental degradation played a
major role in their downfall. As the population grew, the Maya may have
cut down too many trees for building and farming, leading to soil erosion
and decreased agricultural productivity. In addition, a prolonged drought
around that time may have worsened their problems, making it difficult to
support large urban populations.

Another possibility is that political conflict and warfare contributed to their
collapse. Archaeological evidence suggests that many Maya city-states
fought with one another. These internal conflicts could have weakened
the society, making it more vulnerable to environmental pressures and
economic decline.

Despite their disappearance as a powerful civilization, millions of people
today still speak Mayan languages and maintain cultural traditions rooted
in the ancient past.

Reading Passage 2:

Bioluminescence in Marine Life
Bioluminescence is the natural ability of certain living organisms to
produce light through chemical reactions within their bodies. This
phenomenon is especially common in marine environments, where over
80% of deep-sea creatures are believed to exhibit some form of
bioluminescence. The light produced is typically blue or green, which
travels farther through water than other wavelengths.

In most bioluminescent organisms, the light is produced by a chemical
reaction involving a light-emitting molecule called luciferin and an
enzyme known as luciferase. When these substances interact in the
presence of oxygen, light is generated. Some organisms possess these
chemicals naturally, while others obtain them through symbiotic
relationships with bacteria.

Bioluminescence serves a range of survival purposes. Some species use
it for counterillumination—producing light on their undersides to match
the faint light from above, helping them avoid predators. Others use it to
attract mates or prey. For instance, the deep-sea anglerfish has a
glowing lure that draws smaller fish close enough to be captured. Still
others emit sudden flashes to confuse attackers or to communicate with
others of their kind.

Interestingly, bioluminescence is not the same as fluorescence.
Fluorescence requires an external light source and stops when that
source is removed, while bioluminescence produces light independently
through internal chemical means.

- Questions
