The document contains words about one of the modern materials Self healing concrete which is useful for many young civil bachelors . I wrote this because in my first year there is subject called "Basic of civil engineering ".I knew that how I was struggling in it ,so I had prepared this.

Modern Materials
(self healing concrete)
One of the most capitivating new building materials discovered in recent
years was "self-healing concrete", a ground breaking technology
that responds to one of the longest-standing issues in civil engineering:
the weakening and cracking of concrete structures. The material has
revolutionized that engineers created a long-spanning and sustainable
infrastructure, bringing up together biology, chemistry, and materials
science into an perfect combination of functionality and environmental
management.

Introduction
Concrete continues to be the fundamental substance that underlies all construction
wlord-wide; it founds its place in roads, bridges, dams, and buildings ,etc,.. However, its
greatest susceptibility is in its ability to crack under stress, environmental conditions, or
changes in load(weight). When water enters the cracks , it will corrode the
reinforcement steel and cause structural failure in the long term. Traditionally, concrete
that has cracked will often require significant labor, costs, and compensate for the
negative environmental impacts of increased carbon emissions due to cement products'
manufacture upon repair or replacement.

Self-healing concrete is intended to remedy this problem, by healing itself without any
intervention from an outside source. Following research in the early 2010s, self-healing
concrete gained commercial or academic acceptance post-2020s with the use of
biotechnology and nano-materials, and research has entered developing self-healing
concrete-based demolition and replacement materials. Additionally, recent development
centered on bacterial and polymer-based healing systems, has led to self-healing
concrete evolving into one of the most promising eco-forward materials of the 21st
century. Composition and Working.

Principle

Self-healing concrete works on the principle of “autogenous or autonomous crack
repair”.
The most prevalent mechanism employs "lime-forming bacteria", e.g., 'Bacillus subtilis'
or 'Bacillus pseudofirmus', in microcapsules with nutrients such as calcium lactate.
When a crack occurs and water gets in, the bacteria are activated, utilizing the nutrient
to produce calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which clogs up the crack and repairs the
structure.

There are some forms that take up chemical- or polymer-based mending. These have
microcapsules embedded within them carrying healing chemicals like sodium silicate or
epoxy resin. When cracking happens, the capsules burst, releasing the healing
chemicals that set when exposed to water. This type of self-healing is quicker than
biological healing, although less durable than microbial techniques .

The basic biochemical reaction of bacterial healing is:

Ca(C3 H5 O2)2 + O2 = Ca CO3 + C O2 + H2 O

This process actually replicates the natural mineral formation which occurs in limestone,
closing micro-cracks within a matter of days of being exposed to water.

Engineering Properties
Current self-healing concrete has the same compressive strength as ordinary concrete
(average of 25–40 Mega Pa) but with much improved durability and water resistance.
Experiments by Delft University of Technology and Swinburne University in 2023 proved
that bacterial self-healing concrete is able to seal cracks between 0.8 mm in width and
regain up to 90% of its tensile strength after healing .

Other engineering properties are

Self-repair efficiency: 75–100% based on crack width and availability of
water.
