STRESS MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS OR INTERVENTIONS (SMIS)
, Stress management programs or interventions (SMIs)
are defined as “any activity, program, or opportunity initiated by an organization, which
focuses on reducing the presence of work-related stressors or on assisting individuals to
minimize the negative outcomes of exposure to these stressors.” SMIs are a popular form
of employee counseling program, with roughly 40 percent of organizations estimated to
have such interventions.
Companies such as John Hancock Insurance and General Electric have been cited for their
exemplary stress management programs. The techniques used to treat stress vary widely,
including education, time management physical exercise, assertiveness training,
biofeedback, meditation, and communications training.
