NR361 Week 4 Discussion Question, Your Patient has a Personal Health Record, Now What What are the pros and cons of the situation in the case study? What safeguards are included in patient portals and PHRs to help patients and healthcare professionals ensure safety? Do you agree or disagree with this process? What are challenges for patients that do not have access to all of the EHRs? Remember, only portions of the EHRs are typically included in the PHRs. “A patient portal is a secure online website that gives patients convenient, 24-hour access to personal health information from anywhere with an Internet connection and to communicate with the healthcare providers” HealthI. (2017, September 29). The EMR systems play important role in providing services to patients and give them the ability to interact with medical information through the internet. Patient portals are great achievement toward to realization of better patient management, and the healthcare system provides accessible ways for the patient (Hebda & Czar, 2016). In this scenario, the pros that patient having in a PHR is to able to review lab work that is linked to her portal. The cons would be that only part of the lab work was available due to she had the labs drawn at the lab that was not connected to the network she belongs. So patient will need to retrieve the lab result from the ER and bring those results to her doctor to keep a record as well. Some safeguards that are included in patient portals are the ability that patients have in controlling their health better. Also, healthcare professionals can deliver safer and optimal care. Having a strong password to ensure no one has access to your information when logging into a patient’s portal help protect patient privacy. I agree, with this process because it helps me to access my health record and be able to communicate with my healthcare team. For example, when I have a blood work done, within 24 hours, I got my results through my portal. This system helps me to engage with my doctor and save me unnecessary trips to my doctor. Patients who don’t have access to all of their PHRs may not have a complete understanding of their health issues and it may discourage them to be proactive. This also will cause them not to receive the full benefit of the system. Another challenge is the patient will have a harder time to adapt even if they later get access to everything. For example, I know a mid-age person who is having a hard time navigating through the system even after she was offering help to access her portal, but she rather goes to the doctor’s office to get her results.
