Campbell biology chapter 35. Plant structure, growth, and development Exam Q’S AND A’S Animals typically respond to changes in their environment by movement. How do plants respond to changes? - answer- by altering their growth In angiosperms, reproductive growth is associated with the production of what? - answer- Flowers What are the three basic plant organs? - answer- roots, stems, and leaves What kind of root system do tall, erect plant with large shoot masses typically have? - answer- a taproot system What root system do small plants that are susceptible to grazing animals typically have? - answer- a fiberous root system Which is better at preventing soil erosion, plants with a taproot system or plants with a fibrous root system? - answer- Fibrous root system Where does the absorption of water and minerals primarily occur? - answer- At the tips of elongating roots, where root hairs are present Buttress Roots - answer- ariel roots that resemble buttresses; give architectural support to tall trees. Common in the moist tropics. Example: Gyranthera caribensis "Strangling" aerial roots - answer- roots that wrap around host trees and other objects. Shoots grow upward and shade out the host tree, therefor killing it. Ex. Strangler Fig Prop Roots - answer- Support tall, top heavy plants. Resemble stilts. Ex; maize (corn), red mangrove Pneumatophores - answer- Aka air roots; produced by trees that inhabit tidal swamps. Project above the water's surface at low tide in order to obtain oxygen in the waterlogged mud. Ex: Black Mangroves. Fun fact: Sometimes referred to as "dead man's fingers" What is the chief function of the stem? - answer- To elongate the shoot in order to maximize photosynthesis by the leaves. Nodes - answer- The points on a stem where leaves are attached Apical bud - answer- the growing shoot type; most of the growth of a young shoot is concentrated here axillary bud - answer- bud that can form a lateral branch, a thorn, or a flower. What are three examples of modified stems? - answer- Rhizomes (ex: iris plant), stolons (ex. strawberry plant), and tubers (ex. potatoes) What functions do leaves carry out? - answer- Photosynthesis, exchange of gases with the atmosphere, dissipation of heat, defense against herbivores & pathogens Petiole - answer- a stalk that joins the leaf to the stem at a node What is an advantage of compound leaves? - answer- They can withstand strong winds with less tearing than simple leaves, and they can confine pathogens to a single leaflet instead of the entire leaf Dermal Tissue System - answer- The plant's outer protective covering. Consists of the epidermis and, in woody plants, the periderm Parenchyma Cells - answer- Perform most of the metabolic functions of the plant; retain the ability to divide and differentiate into other types of plant cells under particular conditions Collenchyma Cells - answer- Help support young parts of the plant shoot. Usually located just below the epidermis on young stems and petioles. Sclerenchyma Cells - answer- Also function for support. Two types; sclereids and fibers Water-Conducting Cells of the Xylem - answer- Two types; tracheids and vessel elements. Tracheids are in all vascular plants. They are long and thin, and very reliable though not very efficient. Vessel elements, the opposite, are short, fat, and transfer lots of water, but are fragile. Sugar-Conducting Cells of the Phloem - answer- In seedless vascular plants and gymnosperms, sugars are transported through sieve tube elements, which are long empty tubes attached to companion cells that contain all of the cell's organelles. Do plants have determinate or indeterminate growth? - answer- Indeterminate. Except for dormant periods, most plants grow continuously. What is the function of the root cap? - answer- It protects the delicate apical meristem as the root pushed through the soil Cortex - answer- area of a root In between the epidermis and the endodermis. It contains the ground tissue of roots, made up of mostly parenchyma cells Stomata - answer- Pores on a leaf epidermis that allow exchange of CO2 and O2 between the surrounding air and the photosynthetic cells inside the leaf. Guard cells - answer- Regulate the opening and closing of the stomata pores Secondary gro
