, FEMORAL ARTERY
Chief artery of lower limb
COURSE OF FEMORAL ARTERY
Femoral artery is the continuation of external iliac artery
It enters the thigh from behind the midinguinal point, superficial to
the tendon of psoas major muscle MARS MANGALORE
It descends from the base to the apex of the femoral triangle
Enters adductor canal
Finally it emerges from the adductor canal by passing through hiatus
magnus ( last opening in the adductor magnus muscle )
Enters popliteal fossa
Continues as popliteal artery
,BRANCHES OF FEMORAL ARTERY
It gives three superficial and three deep branches-
1. SUPERFICIAL EPIGASTRIC ARTERY
2. SUPERFICIAL CIRCUMFLEX ILIAC ARTERY
3. SUPERFICIAL EXTERNAL PUDENDAL ARTERY
4. PROFUNDA FEMORIS ARTERY MARS MANGALORE
5. DEEP EXTERNAL PUDENDAL ARTERY
6. MUSCULAR BRANCHES.
BRANCHES IN THE ADDUCTOR CANAL
7. MUSCULAR BRANCHES
8. DESCENDING GENICULAR ARTERY
, CLINICAL ANATOMY
1. FEMORAL PULSE
The pulsation of femoral artery is felt at the
midinguinal point, where the artery is
against the tendon of psoas major muscle.
MARS MANGALORE
2. Femoral artery selected for angiographic studies of abdominal, lower limb arteries and
even coronary arteries
