Blepharitis - ANS Inflammation of the eyelids
Anterior Blepharitis - ANS Involves the anterior margin surrounding the lid margin and is
usually associated with Staph infection or Seborrhea. Cell mediated response resulting in lid
margin inflammation.
Posterior Blepharitis - ANS Involves the posterior lid margin associated with meibomian
gland dysfunction and rosacea. Meibomian gland secretion alteration.
Blepharitis history and clinical presention - ANS Swollen and erythematous eyelids.
Burning, tearing, or foreign body sensations
itching redness discharge
absent eyelashes (due to rubbing)
Seborrheic blepharitis may have greasy scales along the lid margin with FOAMY TEARS (classic
sign) diffuse seborrhea of the scalp and ears
Rosacea is related to the meibomian gland dysfunction. Patients may have erythema or
telangiectasia over the cheeks and nose or pustule skin eruptions.

2. antibiotic ointment:erythromycin and Bacitracin (not first line)
3. Lid message
2. Flaxseed oil daily
5. Referral to ophthalmologist for corticosteroids or for longer term uses of oral abox
Hordeolum - ANS Acute infection of the glad in the eyelid
Focal inflamed area of the eyelid where the eyelish meets the eyelid
Bacteria (staph) gets into the oil glands that lubricate the eye
Similar process to pimple

bump on the eyelid
Gritty scratchy sensation
Sensitivity to light, tearing, tenderness on the eyelid
Hordeolum management - ANS Self limiting
Spont clear in 1-2 weeks
Frequent warm moist compresses 3-4times a day
Light gentle message
lid hygiene with baby soap
Refer to ophthalmologist if I&D needed or not resolved in a week
Chalazion - ANS Chronic sterile lipogranulomatous inflammatory lesion of the meibomian
gland. Lipogranuloma caused by the blockage in the meibomian gland or oil gland that
lubricates the eyes. gradually localized enlarged nodule where glands are located near the
eyelash
