, This book is dedicated to the memory of my late parents, Ed and Jackie Beck, who
warmly referred to me as “Nurse Nancy” throughout my life. It is also dedicated
to my husband, Gary Irland, who has faithfully supported my writing and nursing
careers, and to my children, Marcus Irland, David Irland (deceased), and Holly
(Irland) Dovich, as well as our son-in-law, Adam Dovich. In addition, this
dedication includes my delightful grandchildren Russell Dovich and Lucy Dovich,
who I hope will one day find this book useful, should they choose nursing as a career.
More broadly, this dedication includes all nursing students and nurses new to
obstetrics who share, with me, a profound amazement of reproduction and the
incredible forces at work in pregnancy and birth. I am grateful to the experienced
nurses who shared their knowledge and supported me when I was an obstetrical
nurse-novice. No book can cover all the tips and tricks learned in a career that
spans nearly 50 years, but this is a start. More importantly, it is my wish that
beyond helping one to pass the NCLEX examination, the use of these tips and tricks
and clinical judgments will assist learners beyond the examination.
I wish each of you a fulfilling and exciting nursing career as you deliver
safe and satisfying client care.
