MAMMA’S BAKERY PROJECT PLAN
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this project is to plan and manage an IT solution in anticipation of the
expansion of Mamma’s Bakery and Sandwich Shoppe. The IT solution will consist of a system
designed for point-of-sale, inventory and bookkeeping purposes. The point-of-sale system will
allow for customer use of debit and credit cards. The client would like the system to digitally
connect the store to its suppliers, the food services health department, and other business
relationships. The client would also like a website built so there is an Internet presence
allowing customers to make advance orders for pick-up. This project plan will outline project
scope, deliverables, objectives and schedule.
The primary objective of this project is to improve the Mamma’s Bakery and Sandwich
Shoppe business by implementing modern and efficient IT technology. Currently all paperwork,
bookkeeping, ordering of supplies, hiring and firing, and keeping track of inventory are prepared
manually and all business is conducted via telephone or paper documents. Additionally, all
goods are purchased via cash or check. Mamma’s dated operation systems and processes will
become unmanageable with the business’ expansion, developing a clear need for an efficient IT
solution.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT APPROACH
The Project Manager, Rich Ray, has the overall authority and responsibility for managing
and executing this project according to this Project Plan. The project team will consist of project
support personnel, a SME. The project manager will work with all resources to perform project
planning. All project management plans will be reviewed and approved by the project sponsor.
All funding decisions will also be made by the project sponsor. Any delegation of approval
authority to the project manager should be done in writing and be signed by both the project
sponsor and project manager.
The project team will be a matrix in that team members from each organization continue to
report to their organizational management throughout the duration of the project. The project
manager is responsible for communicating with organizational managers on the progress and
performance of each project resource.
According to Didraga, Bibu, & Brandas (2012), risk is defined as “an uncertain event or
condition that, if it occurs, influences at least one project objective: scope, schedule, cost and
quality.” Every IT project involves taking risk, therefore it is essential for the IT team to identify
risk, assess risk probability, and estimate its impact. To successfully implement Mamma’s IT
system, the project team must fully understand the project requirements and clearly define
project metrics from both the business’ and the team’s perspective. A management approach to
IT project risk management will be implemented by identifying events and situations that could
interfere with the project. This approach focuses on relevant and project specific risks. A great
deal of focus is also applied to the impact of this project. A clear impact assessment can foster
cooperation, increase support and funding, as well as foretell success (Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and State University, 2018).
