ANAPLASMOSIS
, Anaplasmosis
Tickborne disease of ruminants caused by obligate
intraerythrocytic rickesttsial parasites Anaplasma
marginale & Anaplasma centrale.
Targets the red blood cells of infected animals, leading
to severe anemia, decreased productivity, & even
death.
SYNONYMS
Yellow-bag or yellow-fever, south african gall sickness.
ETIOLOGY
The genus Anaplasma ( Rickettsiales:
Anaplasmataceae ) contains obligate intracellular
gram-negative bacteria found exclusively within
membrane-bound inclusions or vacuoles in the
cytoplasm of both vertebrate & invertebrate (tick) host
cells.
A. marginale, A. centrale, A. bovis, A.ovis : pathogen
of ruminants.
A. phagocytophilum, affects a wide range of hosts,
including humans, wildlife, & domesticated animals.
Transmitted by hard ticks( Ixodes spp).Causes equine
granulocytic ehrlichiosis.
A. platys infects dogs.
A. marginale is transmitted by ticks & other vectors.
1st described by Sir Arnold Theiler in South Africa (20th
century beginning).
A. marginale - cattle, buffalo & wild ruminants. A.ovis
