The PERMA model is a model of well-being developed by Martin Seligmann and
consists of five core elements of psychological wellbeing. This model can be positively
used to develop the full potential of an individual and create lasting happiness for them.
The five components are namely:
● Positive Emotions
● Engagement
● Relationships
● Meaning
● Accomplishment
★ POSITIVE EMOTIONS
By positively thinking about situations and having an optimistic outlook about them is
essential to an individual’s well-being.
This is divided into two factors:
1. Pleasure 2. Enjoyment
1.Pleasure: This sensation is created when one’s bodily needs are satisfied and indulged
upon, necessary for one’s survival.
2.Enjoyment: This sensation is created when a person is intellectually stimulated and
their creative outlet is utilised to its maximum.
★ ENGAGEMENT:
This takes into account the concept of ‘flow’ which occurs when an individual perceives
a task to be challenging, and possesses the proper tools and skills needed to accomplish
that task. By investing proper time and efforts into those activities, the sensation of flow
is heightened. This will develop the individual’s skills and emotional capabilities.
★ RELATIONSHIPS:
Human beings crave a connection with others along with a strong network of social
support. They have a need of affiliation and desire strong emotional connections. This
also helps release endorphins in our brain and help individuals develop more connections
and increase our relaxation.
