include salivary glands, liver, gall bladder, and pancreas.
4.0 DIGESTION AND ABSORPTION
Digestion involves mechanical and chemical processes. Mechanical digestion includes chewing,
churning, and peristalsis. Chemical digestion uses enzymes to break food into absorbable forms.
Absorption occurs mainly in the ileum through villi.
5.0 FUNCTIONS OF DIGESTIVE JUICES
Digestive juices include saliva (amylase), gastric juice (HCl, pepsin), bile (bile salts), pancreatic
juice (amylase, lipase, trypsin), and intestinal juice (maltase, sucrase, peptidase). They help in
breaking down food substances into smaller units.
6.0 DISORDERS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Common disorders include constipation, diarrhea, ulcers, indigestion, and appendicitis. These
result from infections, poor diet, or low fiber intake and can be prevented by hygiene, balanced diet,
and adequate water intake.
