BIO201 ‒ Topic 16: The Human Reproductive System
© Lesuyai Organic Guides 2025

1.0 Introduction
The human reproductive system ensures the continuation of species through the production of
gametes, fertilization, and offspring development. It also influences sexual differentiation and
hormone regulation.

2.0 Definition and Significance of the Reproductive System
The reproductive system is a set of organs responsible for producing, transporting, and nurturing
gametes (sperm and ova) and supporting embryonic development. It ensures species survival,
genetic variation, and contributes to emotional and social bonds.

3.0 Structure and Function of the Male Reproductive System
Major parts include the testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate gland, urethra,
and penis. - **Testes:** Produce sperm and testosterone. - **Epididymis:** Matures and stores
sperm. - **Vas deferens:** Transports sperm to urethra. - **Seminal vesicles & prostate gland:**
Provide seminal fluids for nourishment and transport. - **Penis:** Facilitates sperm delivery
during copulation.

4.0 Structure and Function of the Female Reproductive System
Composed of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina. - **Ovaries:** Produce ova
and hormones (estrogen, progesterone). - **Fallopian tubes:** Conduct ova; site of fertilization. -
**Uterus:** Houses and nourishes the embryo. - **Cervix:** Connects uterus to vagina and
regulates entry. - **Vagina:** Receives sperm and acts as the birth canal.

5.0 Gametogenesis: Spermatogenesis and Oogenesis
**Spermatogenesis:** Continuous sperm production in seminiferous tubules starting from puberty.
**Oogenesis:** Formation of ova in ovaries; begins before birth but completes after fertilization.
Produces one ovum per cycle.

6.0 Fertilization and Early Development
Fertilization is the fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote. It typically occurs in the
fallopian tube. The zygote divides mitotically into a blastocyst that implants into the uterus for
development.

7.0 Reproductive Hormones and Their Roles
Key hormones and their functions: - **Testosterone:** Male sexual traits and sperm production. -
**Estrogen & Progesterone:** Female traits, menstrual regulation, pregnancy maintenance. -
**FSH:** Stimulates gametogenesis. - **LH:** Triggers ovulation and testosterone release.

8.0 Reproductive Health and Disorders
