The ways of addressing disaster have undergone tremendous changes over time and have
become a complex policy system. The system is a set of policy implementation in adherence to a
certain set of functions and plans defined collectively as emergency management and response
plan. Some of the modern approaches to emergency preparedness and response are set to involve
multidimensional set of efforts aimed at reducing the vulnerability to the emergency hazards.
This is in order to diminish the impact of the disasters and to prepare a timely reliable respond
and recovery of any casualties involved. In the event of disasters and emergencies, hospitals play
a critical healthcare role through offering of the vital medical care to the affected people.
Whenever there is an incident that contributes to lose of infrastructure and patient surge in the
hospitals, it requires both multijurisdictional and multifunctional response coupled with recovery
efforts that encompasses offering of health care ("National Preparedness Month: opportunities
for nurse engagement", 2015).
In absence of the appropriate emergency response plan, hospital facilities become
overwhelmed in attempt to offer healthcare following a critical event or a disaster. The situation
does not only make the healthcare resources inadequate but also increases the demand for service
in addition to likely disruption in the communication and supply lines. This creates a momentous
barrier to the efficient provision of medical and healthcare services. This paper will into the Saint
Leo University Hospital’s disaster preparedness and response strategies in terms of team
organizations and communication for efficient response to emergency and disasters. The
measures and strategies have been formed with considerations of the key features of the hospital
as a disaster and emergency rescue center.
